Thunder Force is an American Superhero Comedy film directed by Ben Falcone. It stars Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer in lead roles along with Jason Bateman, Bobby Cannavale, Pom Klementieff, Taylor Mosby, and Melissa Leo. It was released on 9th April 2021 on Netflix.
In March of 1983, a large pulse of cosmic rays struck the Earth and the population which triggered a genetic transformation in some, bringing out superpowers in them but it happened who were likely to be sociopaths and now they are known as Miscreants. Emily (Octavia Spencer) is a scientist and successful woman and there is Lydia (Melissa McCarthy) and they are both best friends. Emily is working on a formula that can make anyone a superhero but accidentally Lydia is filled in with all those formulas and Emily is now left with the only option to train her to use her superpowers. Then there is Laser (Pom Klementieff) who is creating havoc in the city and so to stop her, Emily and Lydia fight Laser and other miscreants as a team "Thunder Force".
Ben Falcone has also penned the film and I'm truly shocked to see low ratings on IMDb and everywhere. I'm saying this not because I loved this film or this was a very good film. But I enjoyed it. The writer-director has given attention to this film's main two leads and how to fully flesh them out and that too in a light-hearted manner. That's why Emily and Lydia are the heart and soul of the film and appear as likable and wonderful. When Emily's grandmother says " I know you two were a thing". I wanted them to be together because they're so good together.
Nearly one hour goes into training and practice to use the superpowers and so there is less action and punchings. The film is also predictable, obviously, it'll be. The villain is not who they thought and we also get a romantic track between Lydia and Crab-Man (Jason Bateman) and there are some genuinely hilarious scenes where Crab-Man fails to press the desired floor button in an elevator or one of the henchmen of King, oops sorry "The King's" says that his name is Andrew, he is also known by Andy and this and by that.
Melissa McCarthy as Lydia shines. She is hilarious and rocked her part. Octavia Spencer neutralizes Melissa's craziness with her subtle and natural act. Jason Bateman as The Crab, Bobby Cannavale as The King, Pom Klementieff as Laser, Taylor Mosby as Tracy, all has lent good support.
The cinematography by Barry Peterson is good and the music by Fil Eisler is groovy and fits the tone of the film. The editing by Tia Nolan is perfect.
So, Thunder Force is nothing more than an enjoyable ride. If you're looking and expecting that it does something different in the superhero genre then you're wrong and why would you be expecting that. Just enjoy what Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer have brought you, a fun and entertaining ride, so just hop on and enjoy. If you loved Spy Kids, you'll love this too.
