Tom & Jerry is an American animated comedy film directed by Tim Story. It stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost, Rob Delaney, Pallavi Sharda, Jordan Bolger, Patsy Ferran, and Ken Jeong and was released on 26th February 2021 on HBO Max.
In New York City, Tom is a pianist and Jerry has arrived in the town in search of a home. They become enemies of each other when Jerry spoilt Tom's act of playing piano as a blind cat. Kayla Forester (Chloë Grace Moretz) after stealing a resume gets a job in Royal Gate Hotel and starts to work with an event manager Terence (Michael Peña) to host a grand wedding for Preeta (Pallavi Sharda) and Ben (Colin Jost). But Jerry has created havoc in that hotel and Kayla brings in Tom tasking him to catch that mouse at any cost or she'll lose this job. So will Tom be able to catch the mouse? Or will Kayla lose her job?
Based on Tom and Jerry's short animated series by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, This Tom & Jerry written by Kevin Costello is just as was expected. From the trailer itself, I questioned why on heaven someone is making a film on those legendary cat and mouse characters. As I was firm it wasn't going to be any better than the original and they might ruin it. And that's what happens. Making a live-action animated movie was a bad idea.
Tom and Jerry's mischievous behavior brings a nostalgic factor for those who have been seeing them from a small age. Even I loved watching Tom and Jerry, everybody loves it...no haters at all. But there will be many for this film. The film after a point of time will make you cringe, seeing such shallow feelings and characters. Kayla has come to New York City to get a job, whereas the bride and groom, Preeta and Ben, love each other, but it is complicated. Adding such things hardly matters here, as all your focus is here on Tom and Jerry.
Chloë Grace Moretz is the only reason I watched this film. She has that spark to pull off dull character Kayla such gracefully. Michael Peña as Terence is doing what he's best at. Pallavi Sharda shines as Preeta and Colin Jost as Ben is okay. Tom and Jerry have not been given that much attention as they are doing the same actions we have seen them doing thousands of times.
The cinematography by Alan Stewart is just good and the music by Christopher Lennertz fits the light tone of the film. The editing by Peter S. Elliot sharp.
To sum up, Tom & Jerry by Tim Story is just bland and joyless. This is strictly for kids and if you are thinking of watching it just for nostalgia then trust me you'll be disappointed. That awkward cartoon and the real world doesn't blend and you'll feel bad how the film ruined Tom and Jerry. According to me, skip it, you won't be missing anything. Try revisiting those short animated series that feel fresh even now.
